AP Admission and Recognition
Saint Mary’s is a leader in recognition for Advanced Placement (AP) Exams and AP Capstone Diploma. At Saint Mary’s we value the work and dedication of AP students and want to recognize and reward you for that work. Students writing AP Exams with scores of 3+ are eligible to receive advanced standing (credit) up to a maximum of 30 credits for individual courses or up to a maximum of 36 credits for the AP Capstone Diploma.
Admission Information
Advanced Placement courses are accepted for admission and can be combined with your provincial, state or national curriculum courses as per the following:
Arts
- AP English Language or AP English Literature or Grade 12 English
- Four other AP or Grade 12 subjects
Commerce
- AP English Language or AP English Literature or Grade 12 English
- AP Mathematics (Pre-Calculus, Calculus AB or Calculus BC) or Grade 12 Mathematics
- Three other AP or Grade 12 subjects
Science
- AP English Language or AP English Literature or Grade 12 English
- AP Mathematics (Calculus AB or Calculus BC) or Grade 12 Mathematics
- One AP or Grade 12 Science course (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science A, Environmental Science, Physics 1, Physics 2, Physics Electricity, or Physics Mechanics)
- Two other AP or Grade 12 subjects
Engineering
- AP English Language or AP English Literature or Grade 12 English
- AP Mathematics (Calculus AB or Calculus BC) or Grade 12 Mathematics
- AP Chemistry or Grade 12 Chemistry
- AP Physics (1, 2, or Mechanics) or Grade 12 Physics (AP Biology or Grade 12 Biology can substitute for Physics)
- One other AP or Grade 12 subject
AP Capstone Diploma
Saint Mary’s will accept the AP Capstone Diploma as basis for admission to any of our undergraduate degree programs provided that students obtain minimum scores of 3+ on each component. As part of the AP Capstone Diploma students must present the following:
- AP Seminar
- AP Research
- Four AP Exams (subjects dependent upon faculty program as per above)
Students completing the AP Capstone Diploma are eligible to receive the following advanced standing (credits):
- AP Seminar = six elective credit hours (ELEC 1911 and ELEC 1912)
- AP Research = six elective credit hours (HUMN 1901 and HUMN 1902)
- Four AP Exams = credits as per the AP Equivalency Chart (below)
Saint Mary’s University offers university-level credits that recognize the efforts of students who have completed Advanced Placement (AP) final exams with minimum scores of 3+.

Each of the above courses counts as three credit hours with the exception of LATN 1100 and SPAN 1100, each of which count as six credit hours.
Credit for AP-examined subjects, not listed above but with a grade of 3, 4 or 5, will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Note: Credit is not awarded on the basis of interim school, predicted or mock results. In addition, students have the choice of refusing credits.
