Twentieth Century Retail Change in the Halifax CBD
The present study uses an historical approach to examine the processes of the central business district and how they shape the central business district through time. The particular focus is on twentieth century changes in the central business district of Halifax. Types of growth, various business linkages, and changing retail functions show the dynamic pattern of retailing, while zones of assimilation and discard, the core and frame, and areas of blight reveal the growth and decline of retailing in the central business district. Increased residential land use and the rehabilitation of historic buildings are suggested ways to improve retailing at street level and to generate pedestrian activity through a more pleasant environment.
