Welcome to the CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, a Saint Mary's University Centre of Research Excellence.

Increasingly, individuals and organizations are seeking to understand how to make the experience of work healthy and safe - characteristics shown to increase work productivity, reduce business and government medical costs, and improve the health and well-being of employees. In 2002 CN Railways provided us with the seed funding needed to build a world-class research centre focused on better understanding and addressing the growing issues with occupational health and safety across the globe. Since that time, our Centre has grown to include three Canada Research Chairs, numerous faculty, and dozens of graduate and Ph.D. students, making the CN Centre home to the largest collection of occupational health psychologists in a university-based centre in North America.

We conduct research and disseminate research findings in an effort to explore the fundamental aspects of the work experience and to inform best practices in creating safe and psychologically healthy workplaces. In addition to operating an extensive research program, our team also works directly with the business community to assess and improve their workplace standards and regulations. We host training workshops and conferences, provide educational resources, and even advise government entities responsible for creating and/or revising health and safety related legislation.

The CN Centre also supports the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards and Conference. The Awards recognize Nova Scotian organizations that make a commitment to fostering employee health and well-being while enhancing organizational performance and productivity. The Conference provides the academic and business community with access to leading speakers and progressive information regarding creating a psychologically healthy workplace.
